Acting, writing, singing…you name it and Jill Scott has most likely done it. The triple-threat entertainer fuses jazz, hip hop, and r&b into the neo soul sound portrayed by comparable artists like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo.
She worked as a poet during her time at Temple University, where she studied with the intent of becoming a teacher, but found her calling in drama, eventually performing in a Canadian production of Rent post-college. Her experience as a poet continues to influence her lyrical aesthetic, often including spoken word infused with her soulful harmonies. Poetry not only underlines her music, but still plays a large role in her life, as evidenced by her published compilation of poems in 2005, The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours.
After initially creating a list of 50 intended songs for her first album, Scott condensed her material and eventually released her debut album Words and Sounds:Vol I in 2000, which reached the Billboard Top 20 and yielded three Grammy nominations. Currently, Jill Scott is in the process of completing her fifth studio album Woman, scheduled to release before her 2015 tour.
