To commemorate the release of their third LP Home Economics, alternative/post-punk duo Prinzhorn Dance School released a beautifully crafted video for “Reign”. A collaborative effort between Tobin Prinz and Suzi Horn, photographer and filmmaker Dean Chalkley and sculptor John Thomson, the video surely encapsulates the band’s minimal, yet carefully articulated aesthetic.
The video opens with a close-up on Prinzs’ mesmerizing stare, emphasized through the video’s black and white aesthetic. As the tempo of the song builds, an aged artist is pictured drawing skillful sketches, captivated by his own creative element. The viewer soon comes to discover the end result of those sketches: a magnificent kinetic sculpture.
The sculpture features a simplified male and female figure gracefully spinning in a circular motion as they “dance” around each other in similar fashion. As the elderly artist continues toying with his contraption using levers, he stares out at the viewer with a seemingly melancholy expression. As the scene cuts, Prinz and Horn imitate the movements of the sculpture’s main figures.
“The making of this video was a collaborative process that we’d wanted to make happen for ages,” Prinz said in a press release. “Sometimes collaboration is a total pleasure. That was definitely the case here.”
