Explosions In The Sky will once again take to the big screen for their next musical effort. The group will team up with composer David Wingo and director David Gordon Green to score the drama Manglehorn, which will star Al Pacino.
It seems as though Explosions In The Sky are more content to work in film than working on music outside of film. It’s been a little over four years since the group released their last record, Take Care, Take Care, and it seems the title for that particular record may have been pointing to the group’s desire to move onto the film medium. To date, they have had a big hand in creating the soundtrack for such films as Prince Avalanche and Lone Survivor. For this latest film endeavor, Explosions In The Sky will work on the soundtrack for the Al-Pacino-starring drama Manglehorn, a film that sees Pacino play an aging locksmith who attempts to scrape his life together after a tumultuous relationship. The music featured in the trailer for the film gives a glimpse into what Explosions In The Sky will provide in the soundtrack: a subtle, almost despairing sound that will add another layer of drama to the film, underscoring Pacino’s desire to breathe life back into his own life.
As previously noted, this is the third soundtrack that Explosions In The Sky have contributed to. Their most recent ambitious film score project was their contribution to the David Gordon Green film, Prince Avalanche. The standout track from that particular soundtrack was the song “Wading,” which was co-composed by David Wingo.
The fourteen-track soundtrack for Maglehorn will be released digitally on June 22nd, with physical copies released soon afterwards. The soundtrack will be the biggest offering from Explosions In The Sky outside of an appearance at this year’s UTOPiAfest, which runs from September 4th through the 6th.
