NY native singer and songwriter, Ingrid Michaelson, has long been prevalent in the realm of pop. Since her beginnings in 2006, she has released six successful independent albums that have found their way into all sorts of commercials, soundtracks, and even the distinguished Billboard charts. Continuously rising in popularity, Michaelson’s albums have involved a slow and steady progression in the development of her lyrical content with a paralleled expansion of her musical aesthetic.
A pianist from childhood, Michaelson used the instrument quite often in her earlier acoustic music, setting up the perfect foundation to back her airy voice. Her quirky schoolgirl vocals spoke of charming sentiments that struck the heartstrings of all the hopeless romantics out there.
As she continued to gain her footing in pop culture, she progressed from her downtempo and cutesy lyrics to include more mature subject matter and an extra electronic twist with her most recent album “Lights Out.” The music video for her song “Girls Chase Boys” references Robert Palmer’s hit “Simply Irresistible,” but replaces all of the original video’s provocative female cast with scantily dressed men, making an empowering stance against the sexualiztion of women in the mainstream media. For a fun and meaningful time, be sure to check her out at The Fox–it will likely leave you singing along to her catchy tunes for the rest of the month.
