FFS shared their new single, “Call Girl.” This new track will appear on the band’s upcoming self-titled release, which is due out on June 9th, 2015, via Domino.
Just in case you missed our previous article on the group’s formation, FFS is a relatively new collaborative super group that features the talents of all four members of the Glasgow, Scotland, rock band Franz Ferdinand, and Sparks, the influential American experimental pop-rock band that began in the late 1960s.
The forthcoming album from this group features different degrees of collaboration, and on paper, it might seem a bit strange to have these two bands paired together. But, they have tapped into a common well of songs that are on a similar synth driven cheeky power-pop wavelength, and the result is something that is uniquely FFS.
In a press release, Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand explained that, “You might think ‘Call Girl’ was one of ours…Actually, neither of us would have made any of the songs like that on our own.”
To date, the super group has released “Piss Off,” “Collaborations Don’t Work,” and have let their fans listen to and watch video for “Johnny Delusional.”
“Call Girl” is the fourth new song that FFS has released, and despite the title, the lyrics are not about ringing a ‘call girl’ for her services.
Instead, the message of this funky, synth-heavy song finds a young man expressing to his girlfriend that he feels as though, he’s the one that is always making changes in his life for her. This is evident in the lyrics, “I gave up blow and Adderall for you / So, I’d have dough and spend it all on you.” While being off of cocaine will benefit his health in the long run, he feels frustrated that he’s spending all of his money on her.
This theme of frustration continues into the next verse, as he sings, “I realize it’s me who makes advances / All advances / And I realize arrangements come from me / It’s me, it’s me, it’s me who always wants to meet.” In this verse, it’s clear that he’s the one that’s been initiating their arrangements and times to get together, and he’s tired of it. So, this song is asking her to consider his side, and take steps to be an active participant in the relationship, and in planning some of the things that they do together. And, the first way that she can do that is by calling him.
