Serious rain in Austin, TX over Memorial Day Weekend has caused major flooding in the area, potentially harming major music venues.
Central Texas was heavily impacted by thunderstorms on the 21st. Most of the damage was the result of water runoff into creeks like local Shoal Creek which then overflowed into the surrounding area. Areas of downtown including private residences, local businesses, and state buildings saw up to 4.5 feet of water in the streets. The flood was one of the worst that the city has seen since the 1980’s.
Zilker Park, the venue intended for KGSR’s Blues on the Green series, has become too wet and muddy for the shows to be possible. The first week of the series has been moved to Wednesday, June 3. As damage is being assessed, local efforts to remove debris and clean up the damage have been taking place early this week.
As a major music hub in both the state and the country, Austin possesses a number of classic venues. A major fear is that these venues have received significant damage. Austin is the home of SXSW and hosted acts such as Future Islands, A$AP Rocky, Failure and Run the Jewels among many others.
