Girlpool released a video for their song “before the world was big” off of their upcoming album with the same title.
Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad better known as Girlpool shot the video on Coney Island. The video shows the duo having fun. Eating ice cream, riding the ferris wheel, and just running around holding hands. A very innocent video that is shot to make it look like something recorded many years ago. The nostalgic nature of the visual coincides with the lyrics of the song which in essence are just a longing ti go back to the way things were when we were little. The simplicity of the song and video is probably the most powerful aspect of the now seemingly cohesive project. Everything was very pure, innocent, and more or less simple when we were younger. Then life comes at you fast, you lose contact with those you once cared about, siblings move away, friends change schools, so on and so forth. Girlpool encompassed this feeling perfectly. “Before The World Was Big” and complex finding happiness was easier, and being carefree was natural, which is the energy Girlpool longs to feel again.
Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker are nineteen and eighteen respectively. They are on the cusp of becoming adults. I myself am nineteen years old, and the realization that adulthood is something thrusted upon you, and not so much something you realize is happening is scary. More so the attempts of “having your stuff together” or figuring it out is a constant battle that does not stop simply because you are a year older. Girlpool is only saying what we all go through eventually, but the beauty of it is that we will always have memories we can revisit.
Girlpool’s debut album “Before The World Was Big” will be available next week on June 2nd.
