Muse released a new single titled “Mercy” on May 18. The song aired on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio One Show and is a preview to the group’s upcoming album >Drones which is due for release on June 8.
“The opening line of ‘Mercy’ – Help me I’ve fallen on the inside – is a reference to the protagonist knowing and recognizing that they have lost something, they have lost themselves,” said Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy. “This is where they realize they’re being overcome by the dark forces that were introduced in ‘Psycho.’”
Since the group announced the official release of Drones, their seventh studio album, the group has released the tracks “Psycho,” “Reapers,” and “Dead Inside.” In addition to the release of the single “Mercy,” Muse also released an official lyric video and photos from the video shoot for the single.
According to NME, Bellamy also said Drones “explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors.” NME also states that Bellamy claimed that Drones is Muse’s best album to date.
