Just weeks after announcing the details about their upcoming album, Currents, Australian group Tame Impala have released new music video for “Cause I’m A Man,” the 10th track on the eagerly awaited album.
The video for “Cause I’m A Man” was directed by Nicky Smith, according to a press release. It opens with a series of shots that take a city from being bathed in red to showing two characters looking at each other on separate skyscrapers. The video was produced in a way that takes advantage of the visual aesthetic that is found in many video games, with respect to the use of computer graphics.
Smith and Tame Impala did a nice job integrating the lyrics with the images on screen. For example, early in the song frontman Kevin Parker sings, “lost in the moment for a second time,” while on screen viewers see one of the characters standing in the middle of a busy crosswalk as others hurry past without engaging him.
After a colorful transition that includes falling animated men, viewers find themselves looking at a male and female character dancing in a darkened club, as the chorus “cause I’m a man, woman…” kicks in. Then, in a blurred dream like sequence, the two appear to marry, before the male character becomes covered in grey, blue, and red pills. A quick jump cut appears to bring him back to a living room with a television that is broadcasting the story.
What does it all mean?
Well, Parker appears to be leaving that up to individual interpretation as the music video is lacking in a definitive narrative that ties all of these situations together; however, this approach allows the listener to fill in the narrative by listening to Parker’s lyrics.

On a related note, during a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, frontman Parker prompted users of the social site to ask him to premiere a new song. After the prompt, which came from an open-ended question, Parker posted a link to a clip of “Disciples.”
“Disciples” is also on the new album, and it is one of four tracks that are available instantly for fans that chose to pre-order the album through Amazon, iTunes, or Google Play. The other three tracks are “Cause I’m A Man,” “Let It Happen,” and “Eventually.”
