Stevie Ray Vaughan was a Texas guitarist best known for his contributions to the blues genre. The documentary features interviews with artists such as Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray’s brother Jimmie Vaughan, and B.B. King, all talking about Vaughan’s talent and career. Vaughan made music for decades as both a solo artist and a member of a few bands, but only had mainstream success for about seven years before his death in 1990.
The interview segments are cut with performances by each of the artists at a tribute show for Stevie Ray Vaughan, including Bonnie Raitt’s performance of “Pride and Joy.” In addition to talking about his musical career, the artists featured in the documentary talk about Vaughan’s early life, drug and alcohol addictions and the numerous awards and honors he earned. The concert film takes place at the El Mocambo club in Toronto, Ontario, in 1983. It was released on video in November 1991 and on DVD in December 1999 with interviews with drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon. Among the tracks performed at that show are “Pride and Joy,” “Lenny,” and “Love Struck Baby,” as well as a number of cover songs. The concert’s full run time is just short of 90 minutes.
Stevie Ray Vaughan became eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 but was only nominated in 2014. He was inducted, alongside his band Double Trouble, in 2015. The 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony airs May 30 on HBO. Other inductees this year include Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Green Day, Lou Reed and Ringo Starr.
