Run The Jewels released a preview track from their upcoming album, Meow The Jewels. The album will feature Dan The Automator, who created the cat remix of “Angel Dust,” that is featured in the preview.
Via his Twitter account, rapper EI-P wrote, “making a cat sound album for charity has a cost. namely, that its an album of cat sounds. YOU MADE US DO THIS.” The new track rightfully named “Angelmeowster” features famous feline Lil Bub. The very short clip preview of “Angelmeowster” was released via rapper EI-P’s Instagram account.
Meow The Jewels started as a joke teaser for the group’s release of their Run The Jewels 2 album. However, the potential to create a version of Run The Jewels 2 composed of cat noises became very real when interested fans pushed for the project to move forward. Once the idea was out there, someone created a kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to produce Meow The Jewels. According to Pitchfork, El-P announced that the money would go to charity, but he would tackle the project if the kickstarter campaign reached the funding goal of $45,100.
As bizarre as this may seem, the goal was reached in October of 2014. Since then, some of the money raised has been donated to the families of Eric Garner and Mike Brown. Additionally Run The Jewels began tackling this massive project. Some notable contributors include Zola Jesus, Just Blaze, Baauer, Geoff Barrow of Portishead, The Alchemist, Boots, Dan the Automator.
