Miley Cyrus is working on new material now that the frenzy around Bangerz has died down. Yesterday she linked up with The Flaming Lips to perform a new song titled “Tiger Dreams”.
The Flaming Lips and Miley announced that they are working together on a collaborative album. The project is rumored to be seven tracks, and is currently being mixed by Wayne Coyne, and Steven Drozd. The performance took place at the Adult Swim upfront in New York City at terminal 5. Before getting into the song, Miley jokes around with Wayne about the original title of the song being just “Tiger.” She says “as you can imagine Wayne doesn’t listen to much Katy Perry.” Thus “Tiger Dreams” became the reality.
The spacey song is done so in typical Flaming Lips fashion, and might take the casual Miley Cyrus fan by surprise. The psychedelic pop/rock nature of the song is a step in a different direction for Miley, but she handled the intensely dark melody well. “Tiger Dreams” is darker than most of her tracks, and she shows that she has matured lyrically. She is now writing about the troubles of the world, daily confusions, why things can not be simple, etc… The stage setting featured Miley wearing a winged costume, lighting that intensifies the depth of the song, and a pair of dark wings floating around the air. All of this adds to the spacey, suspended in air feel of the song. Wayne Coyne talked to billboard about Miley’s evolution during the making of “Tiger Dreams.”
“She does the pop thing so great, so it still feels pop, but a slightly wiser, sadder, more true version…Some of it reminds me of Pink Floyd and Portishead.”
Miley also made headlines for covering Khia’s sensual single “My Neck, My Back.” To the surprise of many, the singer put a country twist on the sexually liberating song. Miley has been doing a lot of covers as of late. She also performed a covers of The Beatles “A Day In The Life”, and “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”. She also performed Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue”, Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”, and Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You.”
Miley recently released a new song, “Different” featuring Joan Jett after she announced The Happy Hippie Foundation. Unfortunately, for now there is no release date yet for the Flaming Lips- Miley collaborative effort.
