Adding to her post-Civil Wars repertoire, Joy Williams has announced her first official solo record. The new album, titled Venus, is set for a June 30th release.
The new album will feature her latest track “Woman (Oh Mama),” along with ten other original songs. Fans who pre-order Venus also get a sneak peek into Williams’ latest effort with another brand new song “Until The Levee.” Find out where you can get the instant download for the song below.
It’s been almost a full year since Williams’ former band The Civil Wars broke up, and since then the singer/songwriter has been hard at work. She recently released a new video for her single, and has been making her first late night t.v. rounds. Earlier in 2014, she appeared on Paramore’s “Hate To See Your Heart Break,” which was one of the first performances by Williams since The Civil Wars’ abrupt breakup.
Williams describes Venus as an emergence from the ashes of her former band. She quotes Eleanor Roosevelt, saying:
“I heard a quote once, I think originally by Eleanor Roosevelt, that said, ‘A woman is like a bag of tea… you never know how strong she is until she’s put in hot water.’ When I was writing ‘Until the Levee,’ I felt like I was swimming in that hot water. Everyone was asking about the abrupt end of The Civil Wars, I was trying to sort out a new rhythm as a new mother, fighting for my marriage which was going through a major overhaul, and reeling over my Dad’s terminal cancer diagnosis. I felt like I was up to my eyeballs in it all. There was a battle within myself: I could either let it all drown me, or I could learn to swim.”
