Miley Cyrus, Joan Jett and Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace covered “Androgynous” by The Replacements and added a country twist to the anthem.
According to Consequence of Sound, the three women harmonized on the powerful trans anthem as part of Cyrus’s new Backyard Sessions series. The concert series is part of the recently-launched Happy Hippie Foundation, which Cyrus created to raise awareness and garner support for homeless, LGBT and other at-risk youth populations. She collaborated with Joan Jett on the first Backyard Session when they premiered a new song called “Different.”
Their performance of “Androgynous” included a mandolin and tambourine to emphasize the Southern twist they had put on the track. Each woman takes a turn singing a verse, while they all harmonize during the chorus. Watch a video of the concert below.

This is far from the first time Miley Cyrus has used her platform to make a social and political statement – she, along with REM’s Michael Stipe and others, condemned Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act in April. As for music, Cyrus is working on a collaborative album with The Flaming Lips. Joan Jett was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and played at the induction ceremony with Nirvana, Lorde, Kim Gordon and St. Vincent. Laura Jane Grace will be touring solo in summer 2015 as a follow-up to the latest Against Me! album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
