Mat Kearney is an American musician based in Nashville, Tennessee. Kearney is known largely for his debut album, Nothing Left to Lose, that was released off of Columbia Records in 2006. To this day, Kearney has released a total of five top 20 hits on the Adult Top 40 Chart.
Kearney began focusing on music when he started to play at coffee shops and started making small amounts of money. Along the way, Kearney met friend and future producer, Robert Marvin, and started to make music together before Marvin’s move to Tennessee. Kearney stated, “I helped him pack up his trailer and we put a mattress on the back of his truck. We basically drove cross-country and slept in the back. When we pulled into Nashville we slept in a school parking lot for three days until we finally rented this apartment where the roof was caving in and mice were crawling all over….By the end of the summer, we had three or four songs and I realized this is what I wanted to do. It just clicked. So I called home to Oregon and said, ‘I’m not coming back’ and I never left Nashville.”
Kearney’s most recent album, Just Kids, was released earlier this year. The first single off the record was titled, “Heartbeat.” Reviews from Absolute Punk and CCM Magazine state that, “If Just Kids proves anything, it is that Kearney is still crafting albums that are unrelenting in their charisma,” and that “Kearney’s new album is just as irresistibly hypnotic as previous releases… but Kearney’s seasoned status gives Just Kids a more substantive feel.”
