A new video has surfaced for Iron & Wine’s single “Everyone’s Summer Of ’95.” Featuring actor David Dastmalchian trying his hand at amateur wrestling, the video is a sparse examination of a young man wandering the streets, “getting nowhere.”
Evidently, “Everyone’s Summer Of ’95” consisted of attempting amateur wrestling and hanging out alone on the streets. At least, that’s the apparent connection that Iron & Wine is attempting to make in their new video. The song stems from a collection of songs and unreleased demos called Archive Series Volume No. 1, which was released by Sam Beam earlier in the year. The song primarily finds actor David Dastmalchian walking into an amateur wrestling match and suddenly becoming inspired to jump into the ring during the match. Dastmalchian doesn’t really get the opportunity to square off against the other two wrestlers in the ring, as he spends his time running around in fear, being chased by the wrestlers. The lyric “halfway home and going nowhere,” echoes visually throughout the video, as Dastmalchian doesn’t really accomplish much beyond the wrestling match, as we only see him walking the streets alone or in his truck, deep in some sort of contemplative moment.
Although not quite known for a time of discontent and isolation, there’s something about the mid-Nineties that is portrayed in the film that rings true. In the aftermath of the suicide of Kurt Cobain and the ever-changing musical landscape did result in a lot of young men and women feeling distant from the typical social strata, not knowing where to place themselves in the grand scheme of things. So, with that in mind, the journey that Dastmalchian’s character undergoes in the film does evoke a feeling of a “Lost Generation” during the 90’s that isn’t typically addressed by most analysts of pop culture. It also casts a light on that rare breed of youth that seems discontent with their inability to really go anywhere, and thus try to explore new avenues to outlet their particular frustrations.
Or, perhaps, it’s just a video about a kid that just walks the streets, fails at amateur wrestling, then continues walking the streets. Who really knows, after all?
