Georgia-raised, Brooklyn-based indie-rock singer Mackenzie Scott – better known by her stage name Torres – released a new track, “Cowboy Guilt,” which is taken from Sprinter, her upcoming May release on Partisan Records.
Torres has been making waves, lately, after she performed at a number of South by Southwest (SXSW) parties, including: The Wild Honey Pie Day Parties, the Under the Radar Magazine Day Party & Showcase, and Pitchfork, amongst others. Additionally, ahead of the release of Sprinter, she released the title track on Soundcloud, created a music video, and also shared another song, “Strange Hellos.”
Unlike “Sprinter” and “Strange Hellos”, “Cowboy Guilt” is one of the more lighthearted cuts off of the upcoming Torres LP.
So, what does this new song sound like?
Well, it begins with a percussive beat that is akin to that of marching. Then a series of catchy synthesized sounds enter into the track, ahead of Torres’s atmospheric multi-layered modulating vocals. In the later half of the song, Torres makes generous use of effects on the music and her voice. “Cowboy Guilt” also appears to speak to previous American political climates with lyrical references to the South, specifically Texas, and a line that reads, “”You had us in stitches, with your George Dubya impressions/You sang of reparations with the Native Americans…”
