Updated: GWAR has added Clutch as co-headliner for GWAR-B-Q 2015. Additionally, B4BQ has been transformed into a festival of its own. This year marks the sixth annual GWAR-B-Q Party 30th year party. As a special treat, the organizers have extended the event to take place over the course of three days, Aug. 14 – 16.
GWAR-B-Q is a massive festival full of various events to keep fans busy with entertainment. The first day (Friday, August 14), the festivities will begin with the annual kick-off party. Following the opening the B4BQ which will be held in two RVA venues (The National and The Broadberry). On Saturday, the main event will be the birthday bash. This year it will be held at Hedad’s Lake located at 7900 Osborne Turnpike Richmond, VA 23231. The final day of GWAR will feature The Brutal Brunch, an epic closing party new to this year. Part of the GWAR-B-Q proceeds go to Ring Dog Rescue.
Aside from the festival activities, GWAR offers its fans special discounts and promotions for attending . So far fans can receive discounts if they stay at one of GWAR’s partner hotels during the festival.
The excitement that this festival brings each year is unlike many of the other festivals that take place throughout the year. In a review of the 2014 show by Stereogum, writer Tom Breihan states, “[I]t’s an increasingly rare thing: A festival with an identity, a reason for existing, a place in the world. It’s not that it was free of corporate sponsors or long beer lines or drunk assholes or bad music. There were plenty of all those things; word to Monster Energy Drink. But I didn’t get the sense that this thing had been focus-grouped to death or that some booking agency had thrown a pile of money at haphazardly assembling a bill of whatever’s supposed to be cool this year. Gwar-B-Q was a proudly, fundamentally DIY affair from a proudly, fundamentally DIY band, one who built an underground empire by doing their best to gross out anyone who might stumble across them.”
