Green Day will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this Thursday. In a pre-emptive celebration, Green Day reunited with their original drummer and performed under their pre-fame moniker of Sweet Children.
Green Day gathered together onstage for an intimate concert at Cleveland’s House of Blues, the first such concert by Green Day in roughly two years. They have not performed together since a short-lived and even slightly controversial Spring 2013 Tour, and they have picked the perfect time to return to the stage. Their House of Blues set began when Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt reunited with original drummer John Kiffmeyer and performed several rare songs from the days before they became Green Day, when they were otherwise known as Sweet Children. Together with Kiffmeyer, they performed songs such as “I Was There” and “Green Day,” songs which they hadn’t performed in over twenty years.
After Kiffmeyer departed from the stage after an eleven-song setlist, Tre Cool took to the stage at his usual spot behind the skins, and Green Day immediately launched into a massive twenty+ song show, incorporating their big hits from the 90s, popular singles from their highly successful concept record American Idiot, and many other songs from their catalog. The concert also saw the band performing their song “Private Ale” for the first time since 1992, and were joined by Tim Armstrong for a couple of cover songs.
Green Day will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this Thursday. This is their second year of eligibility.
