A building collapse during a concert by British band Doom on April 16 in Chile led to 12 people being injured and three deaths.
The crust punk band was playing in Santiago, Chile, when the building hosting the concert collapsed. According to local media sources, the collapse was due to the venue being overcrowded, exceeding capacity by at least fifty patrons. The administrator for the venue has been taken into police custody pending an investigation.
Police chief Hugo Insulza said, “It is an authorized club…What happened was that more people were in the club than should have been present.”
Recent updates confirm that 12 people were injured at the concert, with seven of those suffering life-threatening injuries. Three others died in the collapse, said to be 22-year-old Fabián González, 24-year-old Daniel Isaías Moraga and 25-year-old Gastón Eduardo Angladetti.
A spokesman for Chile’s national emergency office, ONEMI, said, “There was a crush of people. Even after the venue reached its full capacity, people kept pushing to get in. That led to the collapse of a containment fence that fell on people inside.”
