LISTEN: Sufjan Stevens Releases New Song “Exploding Whale”

Detroit singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens is busy on tour supporting his last project Carrie & Lowell. Today he took a break from his schedule to let a track that didn’t make the cut out into the world titled “Exploding Whale.”

The cut begins with subtle dueling guitars that build to the opening verse from Sufjan Stevens. The ideas that come to Sufjan’s mind are universally relatable. With lyrics such as, “The thing I most regret is having to repress what I’m feeling”, Sufjan details the emotions he’s going through when dealing with another individual in an intimate setting. While the phrase “Embrace the epic fail of my exploding whale” was difficult to fully interpret, it might have something to do with the thoughts and feelings that are building up inside of him. Sufjan later references how fame, money, and pretty much any other vice that someone of famous status begins to denounce can tarnish someone. “Exploding Whale” is a beautifully crafted song, and sonically it is on a superior level to most other acts. Sufjan blends sounds beautifully to paint a picture that sticks in your mind. His “Exploding Whale” is everything he has to offer being thrown in your face. While it may come at you in a sonically pleasing manner, he is still throwing a strong message out there. Sufjan will be on tour from now until the end of the summer, and you can see if and when he will be stopping in town near you.
