On an upward trend in terms of her popularity, Torres has released a new video for her song “Sprinter,” a track off of her upcoming record of the same name.
Shot in a stunning black and white style (except for the shots of the sun and lava), Torres’ new video for “Sprinter” is nothing short of incredible. There’s a very simple presentation in the video, as Torres herself is seen alone in many shots of the film wearing a long black cloak or dress of some sort, donning a long, black hat to complete the ensemble. The video for “Sprinter” features two clashing elements: water and fire. Torres herself has often had to come to grips with her religious upbringing, and the video for “Sprinter” lays it all out on the table. Torres herself doesn’t appeae to be purified in any way by the water or fire that she exposes herself to in the video, but instead she comes to her own brand of enlightenment, a blend between the two elements that brings her to a higher level of knowledge and understanding. She may not quite have it all figured out, but her literal trial of water and fire have brought her to some sort of new, undiscovered Nirvanna, and this new paradise is what shaped the lyrics to “Sprinter.” The larger implication is that she used to run away from the religious principles that dogged her throughout her life, but now that she has a more rational understanding of things, she can see the world in a purer light. The video is spectacular, and seeing the flow of molten lava against a mostly black backdrop brings you right into the enlightenment process with her.
Torres’ sophomore record, Sprinter is due out on May 4th.
