Did Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ear’s perk up at the mention of a video for a song called “I’ll Be Back”? I can’t be certain, but one thing that is certain is the new video that Kindness just recently released for their song “I’ll Be Back.”
Daniel Brereton has been around to direct a few of Kindness’ most recent videos, but none were as sparsely produced as the video for “I’ll Be Back.” The song, which gives off a vibe of solitude and loneliness, fits one of the two women in the video to an absolute ‘T.’ The video has no coherent plot to speak of, as it centers around two women who meet up at a nightclub. The phrase “Meet Up” is a bit of a stretch, as one of the women, a quiet, shy young brunette sits in absolute silence on top of the redhead’s car as the latter of the two attempts to leave the parking lot. The redhead then elects to take the silent brunette to wherever it is that she’s going (probably home). Nary a word is exchanged between the two and there’s very little in the way of direct interaction between the two characters. The question then becomes “Why are these two women the focus in this particular film? Is their journey together supposed to imply something about the human condition? What’s the point, here?” While the song plays to an undercurrent of isolation and fits well with the silent brunette, there’s no apparent link between the song, the redhead, or the journey that is undertaken in the video. Perhaps this was done intentionally. Brereton is known for featuring Kindness’ own Adam Bainbridge in his films, so perhaps this was a bit of a twist. Whatever the reason, despite the fact that there’s very few instances of dialogue in the film, the viewer is taken on an intriguing journey that doesn’t require words to express, but take a look at the film and see how you feel.
Kindness recently released their record, Otherness, late last year. In addition to the video for “I’ll Be Back,” they have also released video for their single “Who Do You Love.”
