Swedish singer Lykke Li released a visual for her song “Never Gonna Love Again” off of her 2014 release I’ll Never Learn. The Phillipe Templeman directed visual for the powerfully moving ballad takes the singer on a hectic journey.
The music video starts out with Lykke Li dressed in all black headed towards a car. After the initial verse and chorus, Lykke Li is involved in a car crash. The music is cut as her body and glass fly around the vehicle leaving Lykke in a confused state. She recollects herself while sitting in the wreckage of the car, and stumbles from the car to a mirror and sees her reflection. The song and video serve as mediums to display how one could feel going through or after a break up. One may feel like their life is in shambles and they don’t know how or where to begin piecing themselves back together. Philip Templeman likes to incorporate twist, or surprise endings into his videos. He also has a track record for big endings to music videos, and for such a powerful song the visual would have to be equal if not greater. Lykke eventually recovers and begins to run, and as she picks herself up and powers to wherever she needs to go fireworks light the way.Templeman has a thing for fireworks, and the brightness of the light from the fireworks brings to light the darkness and pain Lykke Li is feeling. The subsequent performance shots of her singing detail how deeply personal the song is for her. Lykke Li shared a statement with Rolling Stone about the video
“Loneliness and heartbreak follow you everywhere and they are loudest right after the lights go out and the crowds quiet. Here’s an intimate glimpse of how it can be to live your dream whilst stuck in your dream. In the lonely wolf hour, the night becomes your stage, the stars your audience, the rain your memories.”
“Never Gonna Love Again” lies along the common theme of her latest project I’ll Never Learn. She’s searching for happiness, and when she feels like everything in her life is good; it changes instantly. The Swedish sensation sings a lot of sad songs for a living, and pieces of herself are given out to the world, because it is the best way for her to find comfort in loneliness. The song is break up anthem-esque, and that is a good thing because along with the visual the song shows that when times are difficult it’s not the end of the world. What the shattering -pun intended- nature of the video accomplishes bringing to life the metaphor of a disrupting event happening in ones life.
