In case you somehow haven’t heard, the first weekend of a little music festival called Coachella begins this weekend. But if the west coast and desert parties aren’t your thing, you may be instead interested in the Asbury Park Music In Film Festival on the east coast in New Jersey.
The first annual Asbury Park Music In Film Festival takes place from April 10-12, located on the Jersey Shore and just a hop and a skip away from Manhattan. The film festival focuses on music-influenced films with presenters and guests ranging from unknown local filmmakers to Robert Trujillo of Metallica, Robby Krieger of The Doors and DMC, who will perform live with his son after their documentary premieres.
A variety of films and events will take place at 11 different venues around the Asbury Park area, including restaurants, music venues, community centers, art studios and showrooms. The events include mostly film and music video premieres, some workshops and panels, live performances and an awards ceremony.
The festival will open with a screening of the short “Skrillex SuperJam Documentary” followed by “Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC 1980-1990.” The short will be introduced by Robby Krieger of The Doors, and will show how Skrillex and friends prepared for an eclectic late-night showcase at Bonnaroo 2013 featuring acts from a wide variety of genres.
Other notable films include “DMC Squared,” the story of Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels of RUN DMC and his son, Dson, who tries to follow in his footsteps; “Led Zeppelin Played Here,” about an alleged secret show the band played in a youth center gym; and “Jaco,” produced by Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, the story of Jaco Pastorius, a self-taught musician who “changed the course of modern music by redefining the sound and the role of the electric bass guitar.”
“Jaco” will end with an after party with a stacked lineup at The Stone Pony, featuring Bernie Worrell and other notable musicians who are known by their affiliations with the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, James Brown and Lenny Kravitz, just to name a few.
Robby Krieger will perform at a tribute to The Doors with his band at The Stone Pony on April 10, and Matt O’Ree Band will play a Zeppelin tribute later that night.
Passes are available for a range of prices, depending on which events you attend, starting at $15.
