Kurt Vile is currently recording his sixth full-length album, yet to be titled, as a follow-up to his 2013 Wakin on a Pretty Daze. It is rumored to be “his darkest album yet,” according to a recent article by Brooklyn Vegan.
As for tangible details on the album, rumors are flying but little is actually confirmed. Multiple sources support that the album is named All Over the Place. Spin Magazine published an interview with Vile in early March titled “Kurt Vile Talks ‘All Over the Place’ New Album.”
An excerpt from the article reads: “When asked to describe some of the material he’s been tinkering with ‘for the better part of a year,’ Vile tosses off descriptions like ‘sort of dark’ and ‘late-night,’ and offers the sincere but non-commital answer of, ‘There’s a little sad, and a little love.'”
“However, as of late his management states the album does not have a title yet.
It also does not yet have a release date, though a Rolling Stone article said Vile hopes the album will be released this fall.
The album is more personal for Vile than previous albums. He told Rolling Stone, “I wanted to get back into the habit of writing a sad song on my couch, with nobody waiting on me. I really wanted it to sound like it’s on my couch — not in a lo-fi way, just more unguarded and vulnerable.”
The inspiration behind the album was a trip Vile took to see Tinariwen, a Grammy Award-winning group from northern Mali who have been touring worldwide since 2001. Upon arriving at Rancho de la Luna Studio, where legends such as Dave Grohl have recorded, Vile felt moved to create the new album. Vile told Rolling Stone the band is his favorite, and continued
“A couple times they reached out to work with me but it never panned out. Turns out they were recording at Rancho de la Luna. I flew out to Rancho just to jam, then my family met me out there and it was like. . .suddenly my head was just clear. It was really spiritual. That’s when I decided to book some studio time for myself.”
Kurt Vile will play the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago in July, closer to the alleged release date, so we may dare to dream he will give us a taste of what’s to come then.
