LISTEN: Tanlines Release New Song “Invisible Ways”

The duo Tanlines has released a new song “Invisible Ways.” The song is a single from their upcoming album Highlights, which is due for release on May 19 via Matador Records.

Earlier this year the duo gave a preview to their new album with the release of the first single “Slipping Away.” According to Consequence Of Sound, Tanlines mentioned that this album would include “sounds of 90’s New York hip-hop drums” and “lots and lots of guitars.”

The song has a steady tempo that is carried by the strums of the guitar. There are other instruments that are faintly picked up in the background. There are sounds of a drum and what comes across as percussion xylophone. Tanlines member Eric Emm’s voice blends into the steadiness of the song, but forces a lament tone onto the base melody.

Tanlines is comprised of Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm. The group was formed in 2008 and released a split EP titled S.A.W with Salem two years later. In March of 2010, the duo released their first EP, Settings which received good reviews. In November of that year released a compilation of all the songs they work on titled Volume On. The group’s first studio album was released via True Panther Sounds. The combined electronic and pop album, Mixed Emotions set the mark for Tanlines’ future albums to be very promising.

In a blog posted to the Medium, Cohen detailed the bands journey of recording a week’s worth of songs and only choosing “Invisible Ways” for the upcoming album. “Highlights doesn’t sound like 10 different versions of “Invisible Ways,” Cohen writes. “As we kept working on the album into 2014, we did end up reaching for a lot of our electronic sounds, but for us, this is the song that really set the tone for all the work that would follow. It’s both familiar and new territory for us, a lot like the place where it came from.”
