Dr. John Cooper Clarke @ El Rey Theatre 5/2

Dr. John Cooper Clarke aka the “Punk Poet” will be at the El Rey Theatre in May. Clarke’s career spans over 5 decades and ventures beyond music into TV, film, and radio territory. He achieved recognition in the late 1970s during the punk movement with his rapid-fire verbal delivery and stinging social commentary.

Clarke’s solo albums in the late 70s and early 80s had the musical backing of The Invisible Girls, featuring Martin Hannett, Pete Shelley, Bill Nelson and Steve Hopkins. Over the years he was the opening act for such groups as the Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks. In 1979, Clarke’s third album Walking Back to Happiness contained the Top 40 hit single “Gimmix.” In July 2013, Clarke was awarded an honorary doctorate of arts by the University of Salford.

John is currently compiling a book of brand new poems for release in 2015. Although some of his poems were written 35 years ago, they are still vital and relevant today. He is known as an alternative literary figure whose work is known on a global scale. Be sure to check out Clarke at El Rey Theatre in May.
