A possible next big star of the alt-indie stage – Mackenzie Scott aka Torres – has unveiled the title track off her upcoming LP Sprinter, hitting the stores May 4th on Partisan Records. Great music by the great artist, we should say.
The Georgia-raised, Brooklyn-based rock singer has been a massive SXSW performer recently, playing at Under The Radar, Wild Honey Pie, March Into Softness, Pitchfork and other SXSW party days, and an announced performer at 2015’s Primavera Festival. Torres has recorded the new album in Dorset, England with co-producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey) and at the Bristol studio of Portishead’s Adrian Utley, both of whom perform on the album. With themes of alienation running rampant throughout, it’s a punishing self-examination of grand spiritual and musical proportions suffused with a keen awareness of Scott’s place in her family and in the world.
Talking about the new song, it somehow combines the sounds of Warpaint and old grunge, noise sounds and even post rock guitar parts, leaving a strange, but pleasant, aftertaste. Throughout the song you suddenly forget the gender of the person singing, and just go with the flow with the drawling vocal passages, catchy rhythm section and the dreamy mood.
