Band names are getting more and more complicated these days, aren’t they? Not that that’s particularly a bad thing, but the name of the group that we are featuring in this article must surely rank amongst the Top Five Complicated Band Names of All-Time. The name, however, is more or less irrelevant to the music that the group produces, and the video that broadcasts AYWKUBTTOTD’s latest single “Lie Without A Liar” is positively intriguing to say the least.
Personally, I love a good Authurian legend. Stories where there’s a clear boundary of good and evil, and the vanquishing of said evil, though ancient as a form of storytelling, are always embraced as a classic by anyone that has the faintest of familiarity with the tales. Now, what exactly does this have to do with AYWKUBTTOTD? Answer: Everything.
Although the video for “Lie Without A Liar” doesn’t quite fit the single as far as the video matching the lyrical content of the song, the video itself is a fun presentation. Think a mash-up between The Sword And The Stone meets the anti-climactic ending of Monty Python And The Holy Grail meets He-Man and you just might form an initial image of the video. The video portrays a young lad walking toward the dairy section of a local convenience store, where he pulls out an Excallibur-esuqe sword. The store attendee does a double take seeing the sword on his counter, and is baffled that the young kid was able to locate it, much in the same way that the townspeople react when Arthur extracts Excalibur from the stone. The kid then leaves the store with the scimitar and heads towards an old man who performs a ritual of sorts on the kid, bestowing warrior entitlements to the boy. The boy then travels through town on his noble steed (a bicycle), and goes toe to toe with some sort of mythical creature that has apparently slaughtered the local populace for no reason. The boy is victorious in this endeavor, but we do not see the fight occur. The next cut after the beast struts his stuff is the sword, aflame, hitting the ground.
While quite the visual spectacle, there’s very little that ties the video to the single in a way that makes proper sense. Perhaps the “imaginary” adventure that the boy goes on is in fact the “Lie Without A Liar.” The boy could not possibly be a liar, as he doesn’t run around town, exclaiming his deed to the neighborhood.
