The English rock band Muse recently released, “Psycho”, off their forthcoming seventh album, Drones, and it is full of rock evolution. If you’ve been following the band new sound, you’ll notice it is experimental and evolving; it’s good-different. They’re definitely going in a new direction with their newest project and taking no prisoners when it comes to their creative barriers.
Their last album, The 2nd Law was more about galactic sounds with a dub step interval. This new fascinating track was produced by Muse and Robert “Mutt” Lange who has worked with a plethora of reputable industry moguls and diverse in sound artists such as: AC/DC, Maroon 5, Outlaws, Shania Twain, Nickel Back and many more.
Trippy, militant and darkly-intense are words that come to mind when watching the lyric video of “Psycho”. There is a camouflaged guy with a spike bomb as his head while holding a precious sleeping baby; one can draw many interpretations. The song starts off with a military drill sergeant making commands and ends by saying, “Your (swear word) belongs to me now”. Behind the drill sergeant there are writings on the wall of the commands he was yelling to the screen which could symbolize an end of something based on some aspects of etymology. The general message of the song in its entirety could be about those who are very controlling and the characteristic outcome of the person who is being controlled could go really wrong. The sleeping baby could symbolize nature vs. nurture and classical conditioning theories explaining the importance of knowing you are a product of your environment.
The bitter-sweet provocative language, powerful drums and bass creates a message of well-meant aggression for asking “Are you a psycho killer?”. Their sound is so heavy! Can you believe they’re only a triplet? Just raw and skillfully-talented! The certainty for many people placing this song on repeat is remarkably high. The energy in the song is consistent and the new direction is out of the box. By the vocals having a wide tenor range it helps with the unique sounding leading role in telling the story lyrically and the instrumentation helps paint the story.
The riffs are similar to their song “Uprising” off The Resistance album (2009) and “Stockholm Syndrome” especially the live at Wembley Stadium performance when Dominic Howard breaks out into this super awesomeness guitar break (the Free Willy cry) so sick!
Muse plans to drop another single called, “Dead Inside”, on March 23rd as they prepare for touring around the United Kingdom and the Bravalla Festival in late June 2015.
The band anticipated release date for Drones is set June 9th, and is available for pre-order now on their website.
