Harlem-born rapper and singer Azealia Banks will be at Club Nokia next month. The 23 year old brings a hardcore hip hop style that has allowed her to become one of the freshest artists to come out within the past couple years. She first gained recognition in 2008 when she released her Ladytron-sampled “Seventeen,” attracting the attention of XL Records.
From humble beginnings, Banks grew up with her two older sisters and her mother. She became interested in singing, acting and theatre, performing at off-Broadway musicals. Banks would eventually move to Montreal and record two tracks, one being a cover of Interpol’s “Slow Hands.” But it was her next track “212” that put her into the limelight.
Since then, Banks has released an EP titled 1991 that features her “212” hit along with other house-inspired music. She followed that up with the release of her debut album Broke with Expensive Taste last November, which reached #2 on the US Independent Billboard charts. Make sure you don’t miss out as Banks continues to reach new heights.
