Mumford & Sons has officially dropped the first single from their third studio album Wilder Mind, scheduled for release on May 4 via Gentlemen of the Road/Glassnote Records. It’s called “Believe,” and it’s unlike anything that you would expect from the British musicians.
Band members Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwayne have emphasized that their forthcoming album would be a step in a new direction. After two well-received studio albums, it was finally the time to bring out a fresh sound.
Shying away from their distinctive folk and acoustic-driven melody, the Londoners embrace the force of synths and electric guitars. The track begins with a peaceful airiness as Mumford passionately sings, “I don’t even know if I believe / Everything you’re trying to say to me.” As the bridge hits, the song picks up with a forceful guitar solo that uplifts your soul. “So open up my eyes / Tell me I’m alive,” Mumford pleads.
The accompanying video displays a driver’s perspective speeding throughout the streets of London at night. As the driver begins at a slow velocity, his speed aligns with the song as it picks up momentum. The ride transitions into a whimsical dream as kaleidoscopic views transitioning in and out of focus grace the screen.
