While they both wait for their new albums to drop, Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit has lent a hand to producer Madeon for the epic new music video “Pay No Mind.”
Pitchfork first reported on the surrealistic new music video, wherein they quoted a press release:
“The video is the second installment of a trilogy focused on a young woman, Asteria, and a young man, Icarus. Set in a remote city, in an undefined future, Asteria is restless to see more of the outside world. She finds a friend in Icarus, who shares her desire of leaving.”
The video is a strange and enthralling cross between Spike Jones’ Her, 3D Zelda video games and Logan’s Run, with the protagonists Icarus and Asteria touring their confined city scape as they fall in love. The two plot their escape, gleaning clues by means of touch sensitive buildings, which erupt into colorful polygons whenever the two young lovers touch them. By the end of their video, the two have escaped to an open expanse through an unknown portal, leaving the viewer to wonder what will happen in the third installment of this visually gripping trilogy.
The song is set to appear on French producer Madeon’s debut album Adventure, which will be released on March 30th–the artist’s 21st birthday. Musically, the song is pretty stunning and funky, combining upbeat grooves with some fairly complex musical ideas, all with a killer flow. The smooth sounds he coaxes out of his synths and vocorders are tailor made for large audiences, which would explain why he’s already appeared at Electric Daisy Carnival 2014 and is also set to play this year’s Coachella Festival. For Los Angeles fans that won’t be able to see Madeon at Coachella, he’s also playing at the El Rey Theatre in mid-April.
For their part, collaborators Passion Pit have a new album of their own dropping this April entitled Kindred. The band has released few teasers in advance of the album, including the new song “Lifted Up (1985)”, which was quickly followed by the music video “Where the Sky Hangs.”
With advanced promotion of the album ramping up, Passion Pit has been firing on all cylinders. Naturally, the group has announced an extensive headlining tour that will follow the release of Kindred, but they also have several festival appearances scheduled. For instance, the band will appear at this year’s Bottle Rock Napa Valley Festival along with contemporaries Imagine Dragons and the Avett Brothers. To finish off what promises to be productive year, the band will then play the Buku Music + Art Project along with Die Antwoord and TV on the Radio.
More so than his other bandmates, though, Michael Angelakos (the leader of Passion Pit who contributed the vocals on Madeon’s “Pay No Mind”) has been busy with side projects as well. Just last month, Angelakos released a sped up reworking of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” entitled “Katie Croons” under the side-project moniker of Eastern Shift.
