Montreal’s Godspeed You! Black Emperor will be releasing their sixth LP, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress, on March 31.
The album is the follow-up to 2012’s Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!, which followed their reformation in 2010. They also won the 2013 Polaris Prize for that album, then responded with a somewhat controversial statement. Though they went years without any new releases, they have been playing live, playing tours with artists like Nine Inch Nails and Explosions in the Sky, as well as headlining music festivals.
Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress was recorded through late 2013 and 2014, and was finished with the help of sound engineer Greg Norman. It’s a four-track album, but runs just over 40 minutes. They have released an excerpt of the album’s opening track, “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!'”. It’s an eight-minute clip with a slow burn and an emphasis on amplified instrumentals. Listen to the excerpt of the new song below.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s latest album will be available on 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeve and insert poster, as well as on CD in a 100% recycled paperboard jacket and digitally.
