Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche released a new music video for the song, “Lucky Guy”, from his 2014 album, “Please“.
Lerche had previously released videos for “Bad Law” and “Legends”, which are also tracks from the “Please” album. Unlike those, this new video for “Lucky Guy” was shot entirely in black and white with Lerche and his bandmates – drummer Dave Heilman and bass player Chris Holm – playing through the song. In contrast to other types of performance style music videos, the video for “Lucky Guy” does not utilize cutaway shots that alternate between the musicians on a soundstage and scenes shot elsewhere with actors. Instead, the entire four-minute video exclusively features Lerche, Heilman, and Holm. And, in light of the lack of visual stimulation, the audience becomes focused on what Lerche is expressing lyrically, and what he’s saying is heartbreaking.
In a press release, Lerche discussed meaning of the song, “Lucky Guy”, and gave fans a little bit of insight into the making of the black and white performance video.
He said:
“My friend Marius Hauge has photographed me a lot in private and as an artist through the years. He had wanted to capture the portrait in motion and asked to shoot me, my drummer Dave Heilman and my bass player Chris Holm while we performed ‘Lucky Guy’. It’s the most stripped down (save for Tim Fain’s multi-faceted string arrangement and performance) and direct song on Please, and I was very thankful to be able to capture the essence of what was a really charged emotional moment for us on stage every night during last fall’s Please tour.
Marius is a master of shadows and light, and works with intense precision. It’s an intense song to perform over and over all day. ‘Lucky Guy’ is a love song to what was and isn’t anymore. I’ve noticed some people have interpreted it as ironic or almost sarcastic, while other see it as noble, almost overly diplomatic. It can be read many ways, I’m sure. To me, a major theme was trying to find dignity in a challenging, life-changing situation, and softly coming to terms with reality.”
