Shilpa Ray is getting a taste of her own success (sans Nick Cave) with a forthcoming tour and EP headed our way.
Shipla Ray first stepped into the limelight when Nick Cave discovered her talent and brought her on as support while touring for Grinderman and later hired her as a backup singer for his Bad Seeds tour. Now, Shilpa is branching out from his shadow to tour with her very own four-piece band. Among her wide array of tour dates includes a stop at Austin’s renowned SXSW.
Her two-song Make Up EP via Northern Spy Records features covers of the revered Lou Reed and Dinah Washington. For her cover of Lou Reed’s “Makeup” Shilpa Ray “filters the story through the antithetical lenses of explosive noise and charming cabaret,” says a press release. “Dinah Washington’s legendary “What A Diff’rence A Day Makes” is given a seventies soft-rock makeover, and you find yourself completely bewitched by Shilpa’s captivating vocals and dreamy wurlitzer piano.” If her last critically-acclaimed EP is any indication for what’s to come, her forthcoming LP Last Year’s Savage is certain to live up to the hype.
Last Year’s Savage will be out May 19th via Northern Spy.
