A new musical super-group, Sounds of the South, have come together to record and release their take on the gospel song, “Trials, Troubles, Tribulations”. Sounds of the South are singer-songwriter Sharon van Etten, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, singer-songwriter and Spacebomb Records founder Matthew E. White, Megafaun, and Fight The Big Bull.
The first minute of “Trials, Troubles, Tribulations” features a stunning two-part acapella harmony that blurs the line between bluegrass, folk, and gospel music. Next, a tinkling piano line and a pair of brushes playing on a snare drum come into play to support, but not compete with the singers. Eventually, they are joined by a jazz and blues-influenced electric guitar part that accents the elements that are already in place. “Trials, Troubles, Tribulations” was written by Estil C. Ball.

The track is the opening number of a collaborative compilation from artists that are – or were – part of the MusicNow Festival over the last decade. MusicNow fosters artistic collaboration, and now that the festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary, the organizers decided that it was the perfect time to release this album. Marketed as “MusicNOW– 10 Years”, the album features performances from the festival, and it is due out on March 10th via Brassland, according to Pitchfork.
The 10th anniversary album features performances by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens, Dirty Projectors, Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Andrew Bird, Owen Pallett, and many more.
This 16 track live album highlights the best surprises that only those in attendance would’ve been privy, too. For instance, the second song on the album features Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes first performance of the traditional song “Silver Dagger”. Other highlights include, the debut performance of Grizzly Bear’s “While You Wait for the Others”, along with the premiere of “The Owl & The Tanager” by Sufjan Stevens.
“Many of my most significant memories as a musician have taken place in Cincinnati during the MusicNOW Festival over the last 10 years, “ said festival founder Bryce Dessner (via Soundcloud). “When we started, we were driven to create an intimate music festival that was as much a creative refuge for the artists as it is for the audience to partake in intimate and rare performances. We have celebrated works in progress and new commissions, new collaborations and detailed music of all kinds regardless of genre or popularity.”
The 2015 edition of the MusicNow Festival will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio, from March 11th to March 15th.
