To promote their forthcoming album, Canadian elctro pop duo Purity Ring have released yet another song entitled “Repitition” following fast on the heels of two other sneak peek tracks.
To skip the interview and just listen to the new track, skip to 8:28 on the player below. The song pulses with smoothed out synth bass and keyboard stabs, that undulate back and forth like two lovers in a slow, passionate throw. Though rattling, tapping drums percolate beneath layers of synthesizers, the drum machine claps burst into the arrangement like thunder, demonstrating how the duo can make so much out of the minimal elements they employ.
Megan Jones’ vocal performance is graceful, nonchalant, passionate and precious all at the same time. The song contains such overt lyrics as “Tell me that you want to move me around like that” and “I can feel your knees sinking into the bed;” at the same time, she maintains her intellectual distance and obscurity with sentiments like “I’ll make you a season,” which ultimately save the song from feeling hamfisted or humdrum. Her enunciation on words like “relax” and “contract” echos and bounces off the bare walls arrangement that Corin Roddick has cooked up. For such a straightforward synth pop song, Purity Ring really manages to conjure a true sense of atmosphere and depth in this song, making it feel like a world for listeners to get lost in.
You can also hear Purity Rings previous single “Push Pull” if you skip to 1:48. Or, if you’d rather watch the video, you can read mxdwn’s coverage of “Push Pull.”
Pretty Much Amazing was the first to report on the interview and track that were featured on Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 program. During a casual conversation with Stephens’, the band talks about how they actually got the opportunity to record music together on Another Eternity–apparently, they had each recorded their parts separately on previous efforts. Somewhat out of the blue, the band unleashes the snowy new single “Repitition,” before making a recommendation for fellow Edmonton-based musician Born Gold (who actually helped introduced Jones and Roddick to one another).
The band first announced Another Eternity in mid-January while simultaneously releasing yet another song “Begin Again.” Label 4AD is planning to release the album on March 3rd, and they’re certainly making a hard push for the duo’s sophmore effort, judging from all the advanced material they are releasing from it. Fans have had to wait three years for a follow up to 2012’s Shrines, and the band sounds like they’re angling to make up for lost time.
The band will be performing a lot to gear up for the album release, including an upcoming performance at Stubb’s BBQ in Austin on May 23rd. The band has also helped out some other artists, such as UK electronica producer Jon Hopkins on his song and NSFW video “Breathe This Air” and Detroit-based rapper Danny Brown on his single “25 Bucks.”
