The Italian Don of Disco, called by some the creator of synthpop, the mogul Moroder is making a waves with Minogue in a new video release for “Right Here, Right Now”, which will be on his first album to come out in nearly 30 years. Check out the video!
Giorgio Moroder’s From Here to Eternity was the first album to come out that was composed entirely of electronic keyboards, according to the album credits. It came out in 1977, and is responsible for influencing generations of house and disco musicians and producers. Giorgio had at that point made a name for himself as a producer in Germany, having worked with Donna Summer, producing singles such as “Bad Girls”, “Last Dance”, “Love to Love You Baby” and “Dim All the Lights”, as well has producing some material for Led Zeppelin. He also worked with Blondie on “Call Me” and Pat Benatar on “Here’s My Heart”. Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone from the soundtrack to Top Gun, was produced by Giorgio. In 2014, he won his 4th Grammy Award for Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories.
His eclectic tendencies also stretched into the realm of film. In 1984, he released a newly restored and edited version of Metropolis, which contained pop music tracks from Bonnie Taylor, Freddie Mercury and others. He also wrote official theme songs for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
This new collaborative album will feature some big names, such as Britney Spears, Charlie XCX and Sia.
“Right Here, Right Now” is in some ways a culmination of all of this work, and in some ways it is a dog ear on the page of popular music today. There are impertinent beats and heavy synth drops with choruses that fall seamlessly back into that swinging rhythm guitar pattern that is all over Daft Punk’s last album. The video also makes use of that flshing subliminal message-esque font to make sure the viewer remembers who they are watching. There are beautiful cuts of an lcd color scheme going static in and out, and the whole kaleidoscope theme is well done throughout the video. The lyrics are blunt and focus you in on the moment of here and now; they make you want to dance and forget all of your groceries, and laundry and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and lingering thank you notes from the holidays.
Kylie Minogue has been a sensational recording artist for the last twenty years. She has released many twelve studio albums, and first scored with 1988’s chart topping and record breaking single “The Locomotion”, which I’m sure has been stuck in your head many times, and will be again.
