After recording and appearing sporadically for the past few years, Flight of the Conchords have announced that they will be embarking on a reunion tour in America as well as performing some new live material for fans.
As Consequence of Sound is reporting, this will be the New Zealand comedic singing duo’s first tour in nearly five years. Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have been appearing together only occasionally since the two abruptly decided to quit their critically acclaimed HBO series after two successful years.
Following the Sundance premier of his starring role in People, Places, Things, Clement told Billboard in a brief interview that the duo had been discussing the concept, though the specifics haven’t yet been hammered out. According to Clement, the two “are planning on touring later on in the year in the States. It isn’t very solid yet, but we’ve been talking about it.” Since their show halted production, both he and McKenzie have switched their focus to working on their individual careers than continuing to work together as a duo.
Directly following the show’s dissolution, however, the group went on a miniature tour halfway through 2010. They’ve done similar mini-tours, particularly in 2012 and 2013, but the band’s output has been only occasional.
Aside from a single for 2012’s Red Nose, a comedic charity event related to Comic Relief, the band hasn’t worked on or released any new material for quite some time. The result was the humorous song and video for “Feel Inside (and Stuff Like That)”, which was ranked #15 on mxdwn’s Top 40 Songs of 2012.
Like similar full-fledged tours from the band, this tour will feature the duo performing new songs live. Though the last time the band released an album was 2009’s I Told You I Was Freaky, Clement said that he has no intentions of recording the songs anytime soon. According to Clement: “I really don’t like the studio part of music. I more enjoy playing live and letting others take care of the recording.” As always with the group, fans seem rabid for a fourth album, and speculation will likely continue until it is delivered.
Rumor’s also circulated around the group regarding a return of their self-titled series to HBO for a third season. Much to the dismay of their fan base, however, Clement and McKenzie were actually in the process of developing an entirely unrelated show for the cable TV goliath.
Fans will likely be pleased to hear that the group is planning a movie, though the development up to this point has been slow, as intimated by McKenzie’s tongue-in-check comment that “we just need a story” some four years ago. In 2013, however, McKenzie revealed that he had been scoring music for the film, which would be a Labrynth-inspired fairytale potentially featuring Muppets. (Perhaps not coincidentally, McKenzie has been providing music supervision for the Muppets movies, as well as appearing in The Muppets.)
Following their participation in 2013’s Oddball Festival tour (which suffered from several incidents of heckling of the other headliner Dave Chapelle), the band has been fairly quiet leading up to this forthcoming tour.
