Future User reveals its leading man in their latest controversial video–which also features a cameo from a cycling legend.
Future User, the latest venture from Rage Against The Machine/Audioslave bassist Tim Commerford, has released their fourth video—which is nothing short of provocative. This video also marks the first time the band has depicted an unmasked Commerford, officially revealing him as the band’s leading frontman and bassist.
“Mountain Lion” features a cameo from cycling legend Lance Armstrong, who is also a friend of Commerford. In a press release Commerford explains, “We’re ‘cycling buddies’ and typically go after each other in a trash-talking/’I’ll one-up you’ kind of way. We’ll jokingly leave each other voice messages like, ‘Dude, I’m gonna crush you the next time I see you. I’m gonna take you down.’ I thought it’d be cool to put one of his voice messages in the song. When it came time to make the video, I asked him to recreate the voice mail and he was totally cool with it.”
The video is meant to portray a controversial message: the government’s exploitation of the controversy around performance-enhancing drugs as a diversion from attention to its own transgresses.
On the creation of the video, co-producer Jordan Tarlow says, “We put a lot of time and effort into planning the videos. Tim and I usually approach topics from different angles, pitting left versus right and libertarian ideas versus spiritual messaging, but eventually,” he laughs, “we zero in on a common target.”
The band is comprised of Commerford, who is leading frontman and bassist, Tarlow, who performs keys and handles programming and drummer John Knox. Brendan O’Brien of Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and Rage Against The Machine is the guitarist for every song on the album but is not officially part of the band.
