Glen Hansard is releasing what may be the most moving record of his storied career this year. The record is a tribute to personal friend and key musical influence Jason Molina.
When two recording artists get together and begin to hang out, wonderful and even miraculous things can happen. If they’re in tune with each other, their musical tastes and styles will ultimately spark off of each other and lead into collaborations that may or may not reach above and beyond what they may have initially anticipated. The best example of this is Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Both artists had differing styles of guitar playing, but their love and almost reckless pursuit of blues music brought them together and intertwined their careers for a few short years. Once Jimi Hendrix died, Clapton was devastated and often released that turmoil into his records, such turmoil only adding to his cover version of “Little Wing” on the Layla album, a record which was completed mere weeks before Hendrix died.
Glen Hansard found the same musical soul mate in Jason Molina the very second he heard the opening notes to Molina’s Nor Cease Thou Never Nor EP back in 1996. He knew immediately that he had found that ideal musical counterpart. With Jason Molina passing away in March 2013, Glen Hansard will try to make peace with the loss of a core musical influence with his Molina tribute album entitled It Was Triumph We Once Proposed…Songs Of Jason Molina. The album will feature both Hansard and fellow musicians Jeff Panall, Jennie Benford, and Dan and Rob Sullivan, each of which worked with Hansard and Molina in those far off days. Hansard will also be taking part in a small, intimate tour to promote the album and pay even further tribute to his friend.
All of the profits from the record will be donated to a charity in honor of the memory of Jason Molina.
