Mount Eerie Releases New Song “Dragon”

Mount Eerie, otherwise known as Phil Elverum, has put forth a new single off of his upcoming record. The single, “Dragon,” is as lush, alluring, and as fresh to the indie folk genre as Fleet Foxes’ Sun Giant EP that was released back in 2008.

Cars passing on a local highway. An airplane passing overhead. The wind rustling through the trees. These are just a few of the sounds that one can expect to hear in Mount Eerie’s new single, “Dragon.” While Mount Eerie has featured a revolving door of various musicians, Phil Elverum has been the creative helm for the group, which formed after what some would call the untimely demise of The Microphones back in 2003. While the Microphones featured an eclectic mix of indie folk and indie electronic sounds, none of the projects that Elverum released under the moniker sounded anything like the single off of his upcoming double record, Sauna.

As mentioned earlier, the sound of “Dragon” evokes memories of the Fleet Foxes, the biggest indie surprise out of 2008. “Dragon” incorporates beautiful harmonic vocals, lush, playful guitar sounds, and sounds taken from both the natural and mechanical worlds, making for a wonderful auditory pairing. While not quite as “experimental” as Pre-Human Ideas, Eerie’s previous record, the single is at once somber and relaxing. If you close your eyes for just a few seconds, you can almost envision some sort of far away forest retreat, sipping hot cocoa and strumming a little guitar, absorbing the lush natural environment around you.

Sauna is a double album recorded by Mount Eerie. It will see a public release on February 3rd.
