Peter Doherty has released a haunting new song called “Flags Of The Old Regime,” written about and in tribute to Amy Winehouse.
The untimely death of Amy Winehouse on July 23, 2011 at the age of only 27 took nearly everyone in the music industry by complete shock and surprise. Amongst those shocked individuals was none other than Peter Doherty of Libertines fame. In tribute to the late Winehouse, Doherty has released a new single dedicated to her memory called “Flags Of The Old Regime,” a hauntingly beautiful tribute to the deceased singer that plays to some of the inner demons that she faced throughout her career. Further attributing to the memory of Amy Windehouse, all of the proceeds from the single will go directly to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which seeks to prevent drug and alcohol abuse in young people. The song strikes an emotional chord throughout and is punctuated by several piercing lyrics, including this one that is without a doubt a direct reference to Winehouse herself: “You made your fortune,/But you broke inside.”
With the tribute single, Doherty is back in the spotlight after a brief stint with drugs kept him out for a few months. His previous group, The Libertines, have also talked of a new album and reunion tour, which will begin with a concert in London’s Hyde Park.
The Amy Winehouse Foundation was founded by the parents of Winehouse on what would have been her 28th birthday. It has currently raised over one million pounds in support of programs to combat drug and alcohol abuse in young aspiring musicians and songwriters.
