Saul Williams has released a new song “All Coltrane Solos At Once” featuring Haleek Maul. In conjunction with the new song, Williams wrote an essay in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Williams essay opens with the following paragraph:
“What is the perspective of those who “#staywoke”, who resist? It is a mixture of seeing thru the lies and deception used to keep common-folk non-questioning/active participants in a state that defeats the commoner with hopes of one day entering the elitist 1% percent, while killing unions and widening the wealth gap & a desire to engage more people to speak up and out against the powers that be.”
Williams’ full essay, which can be viewed on Fader, deals with issues of inequality and the lesser status of minorities despite the work of Martin Luther King Jr. As for his collaboration with Haleek Maul, “All Coltrane Solos At Once” is a powerful song with short phrases meant to create impact. Lines such as “Race is performative” stand out in the base heavy beat. Similar to the Williams’ essay, “All Coltrane Solos At Once” is a reflection on race relations.
