The largely prolific yet lately nonproductive Brooklyn based singer songwriter has announced the release of his newest full length effort, the first to come out since 2010’s The Age of Adz.
Asthmatic Kitty, the independent record label out of Holland Michigan, will release Carrie and Lowell on March 31st in the United States and March 30th in Europe. Stevens claims that the album will be a return to his original “folk roots”, and what better content to cover through the medium of folk than the ones closest to down home human existence: life and death, love and loss and Stevens’ struggle make sense of the beauty and ugliness of love. While these themes are universal in their scope and range, and largely incorporated throughout any form of art willing to lend itself to human expression, Stevens has managed to distill succinctly into only eleven tracks. The track list is below.
The album is named after Stevens’ mother and stepfather.
Asthmatic Kitty was started by an allegedly close knit group of pals, in whose vanguard is Sufjan and his stepfather. They have since dispersed from their Michigan roots to become a flourishing independent label with members spanning the United States.
Although he has not released a credited album in his name since 2010, Stevens has remained busy collaborating and creating with other artists for various and sundry projects including a set of Christmas albums, a classical project called “Planetarium” which is a song cycle based off the planets in our solar system, as well as an album with Son Lux and the rapper Serengeti.
The newest album will feature artists who have worked with Stevens before, such as Casey Foubert, Laura Veirs, Nedelle Torrisi, Sean Carey, Ben Lester and Thomas Bartlett.
