The return of DOOMSTARKS after three years is fruitful with a new song “Ray Gun.” Despite the return of this collaboration of artists, the song is off of Sour Soul by BadBadNotGood and Ghostface Killah.
The blend of Jazz and Hip hop is a common result from this group, but is enhanced by the use of live sampling and influence from Frank Dukes instead of their usual samples. In fact, not only is song using the live capabilities, but the entire album, set for a February 24th release, uses it as to embrace the 1950s and 70s style
BadBadNotGood spoke to Buzzfeed about the collaboration:
When we first heard we had a chance to get DOOM on a track for Sour Soul, we were ecstatic and also a little nervous. DOOM and Ghostface are two of our favourite rappers and creating an instrumental that blended both Ghostface’s raw powerful flow and DOOM’s poetic quirkiness proved challenging. We ended up with an arranged form that had also had an improvised feel to it, and a string and horn arrangement at the end inspired by DOOM’s love of sampling old movie soundtracks.
