Kinnecom – Virtual Gravity

Two Voices, One Artist

Alternative Hip Hop artist Kinnecom weaves creative rhymes, a powerful singing voice, and haunting instrumentals into a musical tapestry called Virtual Gravity.  Kinnecom can be proud of this release because it is really unique: Especially when compared to its peers, there is nothing out there that sounds like this.  Kinnecom’s voice is the thread that binds the fabric of this album. It’s frailty, coupled with beautifully executed instrumentals, play the perfect counter-balance to his more stark and gritty raps. The closet comparison would be Linkin Park, but that’s not fair; Linkin Park only wish they sounded as good as Kinnecom.

From the first song all the way through these 8 tracks, Kinnecom’s haunting voice is the real meat of the album. Once “Under Virtual Gravity” begins, Kinnecom’s voice has you hooked. “Drown and Stare” and “Echo Emotion” both contain Coldplay-esque melodies coupled with deep bass lines and Kinnecom’s mixture of singing and rapping.  There is a stark difference between his singing voice and his rapping voice; It wouldn’t be far fetched to think you’re hearing two different people – but the fact that it’s coming from one guy is just remarkable.  All of the tracks stand out, but if one had to be heard out of the the others it’s “Breathe You In, Sink Into You”. It’s here where Kinnecom’s voice sounds the best. Singing both main vocals and background, the layering of his voice creates a moment that has to be heard to be appreciated.

If you’re not a hip-hop fan, this album might change your opinion. It shows what can be done in a genre when the right person takes their own approach and makes it their own.  At moments, it’s hard to even categorize Virtual Gravity as Hip Hop because it doesn’t sound like your typical hip hop album.  No matter what you call it though, there’s no denying it’s good music.
