LISTEN: Torche Release New Song “Annihilation Affair”

The sludge-metal quartet that hails from Miami has released a taste of their forthcoming album with this new heavy slammer. Dig it.

Restarter, which will be released on February 24th by Relapse Records, will be the Miami band’s fourth full length album, and judging by the sound of “Annihilation Affair”, it will be consistent with their well honed wall-of-distortion sound.

The song starts in a highly developed early Sabbath style riff ruckus that rides a highly electrified wave to crash upon the rocks of Steve Brooks and Andrew Elstner’s harmonized vocals, which come out of a pretty neo-punk meets alternative-rock vein. As this continues and we try to discern the lyrics, screams of feedback cut through the mix and the riffs continue to fall like some lightening maelstrom all the way to the drum breakdown. The producing in this section is especially tight, with the slow building of a perfect storm of guitar wails and string scratches and echoing winds of pure power all being scorched by fervent flames of feedback.

This is how the song ends.

It is an extremely tonic based experience, with little modulation from the original opening riff, which allows the track to build in other ways that are not focused on the movement of pitches, but rather, the creation of soundscapes that tear through the track like a hurricane, while still leaving behind a breeze of recollection. It works awesomely.

Jonathan Nuñez, the bass player and producer spoke of the impeding album.

I feel it’s strong sonically and harder hitting than the previous record [Harmonicraft]. I’m happy with the last record, but I feel on this record, it’s just more solid song to song. You’ve got to move forward. You can’t release the same record over and over.

We eagerly await the return of their crushing style.
